WHALES AND NORTHERN LIGHTS
Come with us in search of these fantastic cetaceans, giants of the sea that between November and January come to the waters of the Norwegian Sea to feed on herring.
Two natural wonders. One Arctic journey. Endless memories.
Imagine setting sail from the harbor of Tromsø, the sky painted in the soft blue of Arctic winter light, and the sea calm like polished glass. The boat glides silently through the fjords, leaving behind the city's lights and drifting into a world of wild beauty — where the sea holds giants, and the sky holds fire.
With FRAMTours, this isn’t just a tour — it’s a deeply felt expedition into the soul of Northern Norway, where every ripple on the water or flicker in the sky might signal something extraordinary. It’s a sailing experience designed for those who seek the quiet power of nature, the thrill of real exploration, and the calm joy of witnessing something few people on Earth ever get to see.
From late October through January, the fjords around Tromsø become the stage for one of nature’s most breathtaking events: the arrival of the herring, followed closely by pods of orcas and humpback whales. These powerful and intelligent animals navigate the narrow fjords to feed, communicate, and interact with each other — and you get a front-row seat to the drama.
Our vessel takes you into areas like Kaldfjorden, Skjervøy, or Lyngen, depending on where whales are most active. You may see:
Humpbacks launching from the sea, mouths wide open in bubble-net feeding
Orcas slicing through the water, their dorsal fins gliding like sails
Sea eagles circling overhead, and seabirds trailing the action
We prioritize low-noise sailing and respectful distance, ensuring sustainable wildlife viewing that places the animals’ well-being first.
🌌 Northern Lights by Sea
As darkness returns in the early afternoon, our focus turns from sea to sky. With the city lights far behind us, the open fjords offer one of the clearest, least polluted views of the aurora borealis — a natural theatre for the celestial dance that has awed explorers and dreamers for centuries.
Wrapped in thermal suits or curled up with a hot drink in the heated cabin, you wait for the aurora. And then, sometimes when you least expect it, the sky stirs: a pale green ribbon unfurls across the stars, shifting, pulsing, rising in brilliance — and suddenly you understand why people cross oceans to see this.
From the deck, you’ll experience the aurora in its most authentic form — with no crowds, no traffic, just the sound of water against the hull and the crackle of the northern sky.
We sail aboard a comfortable expedition vessel designed for Arctic waters. With heated indoor areas, panoramic windows, and open decks, you’re always close to the elements — but never far from warmth and safety.
Our guides are local experts with years of experience reading Arctic weather and wildlife patterns. They share stories, explain behaviors, and help you photograph these moments so you can bring home more than just memories.
