GREENLAND: EXPEDITION ULTIMA THULE

8 Days /
7 Nights

The Last Borderland
The edge of the known world. Ultima Thule, the ancient Latin name for the most distant lands, is now within reach. Embark on an incredible journey to a legendary land, rich in history and millennia-old traditions. This expedition will take you beyond your comfort zone, challenging you to push further and discover your limits.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is rich in history and traditions — yet 85% of its territory is covered by ice: the vast Ice Cap. To cross from the East to the West coast, we take a 2.5-hour flight, stepping into a land where time seems to pause, allowing us to admire this extraordinary, untouched territory.

Wildlife is never far away. Common seals, humpback whales, Greenland whales, and countless seabirds — including puffins — await on an eight-day journey that will pass in the blink of an eye.

Our borderland expedition begins in Ilulissat, Greenland’s tourist capital and the home of the drifting icebergs in Disko Bay. From here, the icebergs will captivate us at every turn — even from the window of our hotel.

If you are seeking pure nature, silence, the sound of waves, the gusts of Arctic wind, and a break from everyday life, Greenland is the place for you.

Greenland demands adaptation — from the traveler willing to embrace it. Underestimating this land can turn the experience turbulent, so preparing both physically and, above all, mentally is essential to fully enjoy the journey.

Program

The day begins early in the morning with an Air Greenland flight from Copenhagen to Nuuk, followed by a private transfer to the hotel and check-in. After a welcome meeting with the guide, you will have free time to explore Nuuk, the small but lively capital of Greenland. In the afternoon, embark on a scenic boat excursion to the abandoned settlement of Qooqqut, navigating spectacular fjords, with the opportunity to catch fresh fish, which will then be prepared at the renowned Qooqqut Nuan restaurant. After dinner, return to Nuuk in the evening and overnight at a 4**** hotel.

After breakfast, a free morning to explore Nuuk, a town rich in museums, theaters, and cultural events. The city also offers many opportunities for outdoor and sports activities. A visit to the National Museum (entrance not included) is recommended to gain deeper insight into local history and culture. From the city center, the fjords are easily reachable on foot, or the surrounding mountains and wilderness can be reached within a few minutes by car. Dinner on your own and overnight at a 4**** hotel.

Early morning departure with transfer to the airport and flight to Ilulissat, the iceberg capital of the world, with a packed breakfast and spectacular views over Disko Bay. Arrival and check-in at a hotel overlooking the fjord. Guided walk through the town, visiting the harbor, local market, historic sites, and learning about Greenlandic culture. Visit to the Icefjord Centre and the ancient Inuit settlement of Sermermiut, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the afternoon, enjoy a scenic hike along the “Yellow Trail” among icebergs and Arctic nature, with possible wildlife sightings. Dinner at the hotel and overnight stay.

After breakfast, boat excursion in Disko Bay to the Eqi Glacier, one of the most active glaciers in Greenland. During the cruise, you will admire spectacular icebergs and, with some luck, spot whales. In front of the majestic ice wall, you may witness the dramatic calving of the glacier. The guide will provide insights into the nature, ice, and history of the area. Return to Ilulissat in the late afternoon, dinner at the hotel, and overnight stay at a 3***s hotel.

After a buffet breakfast, the day is dedicated to an in-depth visit of Ilulissat, whose name in Greenlandic means “iceberg.” In the afternoon, embark on a boat excursion in Disko Bay for whale watching, as these waters are abundant with whales during the summer months. With some luck, you may see humpback whales and Greenland whales, sometimes accompanied by their calves. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided during the excursion. Return to Ilulissat in the late afternoon, followed by dinner and overnight at a 3***s hotel.

After a buffet breakfast at the hotel, you will have some free time to explore Ilulissat on your own before a private transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Sisimiut, the second largest city in Greenland, arriving in the late afternoon/evening. Private transfer to the hotel, dinner at the 3***s hotel, and free time at your disposal.

Morning arrival in Sisimiut, Greenland’s second-largest city, via a scenic coastal flight. Check-in at the hotel followed by a short guided tour of the town to discover its history, culture, and daily life. In the afternoon, boat excursion to the abandoned settlement of Assaqutaq, now used as a summer camp, with a walk among historic buildings and natural surroundings. Along the way, there is a chance to spot whales in the fjord. Return to Sisimiut in the late afternoon, dinner, and overnight at a 3***s hotel.

Our journey comes to an end. After breakfast, transfer to Ilulissat Airport for the domestic flight to Nuuk, followed by connection to the international flight to Copenhagen. Arrival in the Danish capital in the late afternoon/evening and end of services.

GREENLAND: ULTIMA THULE

It is recommended to dress in layers to easily adapt to changing weather. Essential items include a waterproof and windproof jacket, water-resistant pants, sturdy hiking boots, a hat, and gloves. A dry change of clothes and warm layers are also useful, especially for cooler evenings or excursions in exposed areas.

Greenland has a small population, mainly concentrated along the coast in small settlements. Most inhabitants are of Inuit descent, with strong cultural traditions linked to fishing, hunting, and Arctic life. Greenlanders are generally very hospitable, and traveling in the country allows visitors to experience this unique culture firsthand.

In August, Greenland’s wildlife is particularly active. At sea, you may see whales (such as humpback and minke whales), seals, and numerous seabirds. On land, reindeer, Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, and many bird species can be observed. Narwhals and polar bears are part of the ecosystem, but they live mainly in remote northern regions, so sightings are rare and cannot be considered expected during the trip.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon visible in Greenland, but the chances of seeing them in August are very low. Nights are still very bright, especially in the north, and the sky is not dark enough for the aurora to appear. Conditions become more favorable from late autumn onwards, so sightings cannot be considered expected during a summer trip.
