Scoresbysundet’s magnificent fjord system

Scoresbysundet is a vast system of fjords and glaciers that branches out over an area of over 60,000 square kilometers. You will see magnificent fjord landscapes, magnificent icebergs, abundant wildlife and perhaps visit one of the most remote communities on earth.

The largest national park in the world

Northeast Greenland National Park is a gigantic nature reserve of around 971,000 square kilometers located in the remote northeast of Greenland. In the absence of humans, you will find a rich wildlife. If you are lucky, you may even see iconic Arctic species such as musk oks and polar bears.

Why join this cruise?

1. Discover the world’s largest fjord system

Scoresbysund is the biggest fjord system on the planet, with dramatic glaciers, towering peaks, and endless icebergs. It’s a raw, untouched Arctic landscape that very few people ever get to experience.

2. Experience true Arctic remoteness

This part of East Greenland is incredibly isolated and only accessible for a short time each year. Traveling with HX gives you rare access to one of the most remote and pristine regions on Earth.

3. Get close to Arctic wildlife

From whales and seals in the icy waters to musk oxen and Arctic foxes on land, the region is rich in wildlife. HX expeditions are led by experts who help you spot and understand these animals in their natural habitat.

4. Enjoy real expedition adventures

This isn’t a typical cruise you’ll actively explore. Expect Zodiac landings, guided hikes, and even kayaking among icebergs, all adapted to the ever-changing Arctic conditions.

5. Learn while you explore

HX combines travel with science and education. With onboard experts, lectures, and hands-on experiences, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the environment you’re exploring.

This expedition will be made in cooperation with Hurtigruten Expeditions

Program

The adventure starts in Reykjavík.
Reykjavík is a relaxed city full of art, culture and history, and is really worth spending time getting to know.
Take a stroll down Laugavegur Street with its shops and boutiques, and be impressed by the remarkable Hallgrimskirkja church or visit the fascinating Reykjavik Art Museum.
If you have time, we recommend booking a pre-program with us to experience some of Iceland's natural gems before your expedition cruise begins.

As we sail towards the Greenland Sea on our way to the world's largest island, you can relax, set sail and get to know the facilities on board.
The expedition team will give a series of lectures about your upcoming adventure and explain the procedures for visiting the vulnerable natural areas and Arctic indigenous peoples in a respectful manner. In the lecture hall you will learn what to expect from the magnificent landscapes of East Greenland National Park, and the beautiful fjords of Scoresby Sound.
If you're feeling fit, head to the fitness room for a workout with a unique view. On the other hand, if you'd rather take it easy, you can try out the sauna, relax in the hot tub, indulge in one of the onboard restaurants or just find a quiet corner and read a good book with a cup of coffee or tea. Are you interested in science? Then you can join one of the research programs on board. This is a fun and engaging way to contribute to global research.

Explore the wilderness of the east

For the next ten days we will explore Greenland's remote and untouched east coast. The coastline is around 2800 km long from north to south. It is cold, isolated and remote, even by Greenlandic standards. The East Greenland Current flows south, bringing in lots of sea ice directly from the Arctic Ocean. Life for the people who live here is challenging, but a paradise for wildlife that depends on the ice, such as the polar bear.
Local weather and ice conditions will determine the final route, but the plan is to first head to Scoresbysundet, the world’s largest fjord system. You will experience a deep sense of tranquility in this wild and rugged area, with white and blue icebergs floating in mirror-like waters surrounded by towering mountains. If conditions permit, we will visit Ittoqqortoormiit, the northern hemisphere’s most remote community.
If the sea ice cooperates, we continue our journey north to the beautiful Northeast Greenland National Park, the world's largest national park. Visiting this fragile, Arctic wilderness is a rare experience, with only a few visitors allowed here each year.
Apart from old trapper cabins, a few research stations and a military outpost, there are very few signs of human life in this 972,000 square kilometre park. You will be hard-pressed to find a more peaceful place on earth. Here you will truly experience a sense of tranquility as we explore the beautiful wilderness.
As this is an expedition cruise, the captain and expedition team will guide us to the best spots on a daily basis. Our goal when we go ashore is to make the most of this: small boat trips, nature walks, kayaking adventures and wildlife watching.

After exploring the beautiful nature of Greenland, we head back to Iceland. Spend your days at sea talking about your experiences with new acquaintances, studying nature in the Science Center, listening to a lecture or two, or just relaxing on deck. Watch for the seabirds that follow our ship, maybe a whale will appear too?
As you reflect on your journey, from the fragile ecology of the fjord systems to the beautiful floating ice, you are sure to notice that Greenland has left its mark on you.

We bid farewell to MS Spitsbergen as the expedition cruise comes to an end in the beautiful city of Reykjavik.
With exciting museums, stylish galleries, restaurants and geothermal pools, there is much to experience in Reykjavik.
If you want to see more of Iceland, you can join the optional after-program before heading home. Or you can extend your stay to enjoy more of Reykjavik and the geothermal attractions that surround the city. It's a great place to end a great sea voyage!

Greenland: expedition to Scoresbysund

It is recommended to dress in layers to easily adapt to changing weather. Essential items include a waterproof and windproof jacket, water-resistant pants, sturdy hiking boots, a hat, and gloves. A dry change of clothes and warm layers are also useful, especially for cooler evenings or excursions in exposed areas.

Greenland has a small population, mainly concentrated along the coast in small settlements. Most inhabitants are of Inuit descent, with strong cultural traditions linked to fishing, hunting, and Arctic life. Greenlanders are generally very hospitable, and traveling in the country allows visitors to experience this unique culture firsthand.

In August and September, Greenland’s wildlife is particularly active. At sea, you may see whales (such as humpback and minke whales), seals, and numerous seabirds. On land, reindeer, Arctic foxes, Arctic hares, and many bird species can be observed. Narwhals and polar bears are part of the ecosystem, but they live mainly in remote northern regions, so sightings are rare and cannot be considered expected during the trip.
In the Scoresby sund seeing polar bears are not guarantee but they can be seen.

Life onboard is relaxed yet enriching. Your days typically include guided excursions such as Zodiac landings or hikes, followed by time to unwind on the ship. You can attend lectures from the Expedition Team, enjoy panoramic views from observation decks, or relax in comfortable lounges. Evenings often feature briefings about the next day’s adventures, creating a sense of anticipation and community among guests.

Both ships offer modern amenities designed for comfort in remote environments. You’ll find cozy cabins, restaurants serving high-quality meals, fitness areas, and welcoming social spaces. A highlight onboard is the Science Center, where guests can engage with interactive exhibits and learn more about the destinations. The ships are designed to be both comfortable and functional, supporting an immersive expedition experience.
