PLAN A VISIT

Tromsø has a lot to offer travellers every time of the year. A lot depends about your main goals and atractions: if you are looking for Northern Lights, then fall and winter are the right seasons, instead if you are wandering when is the best moment to hike or ride you e-bike arounds the fjords or paddle in the sea, then spring and summer are perfect!

We are doing this because we love it, and best moments needs to be shared with you!

This is what we love the most, month by month, as we love it!

JANUARY

January is a magical month: we experience the blue hour at its best during the first two weeks and in the final week the sun, finally, rises for the first time in 2 and a half months. The excitement surrounding the sun returning is felt city wide including a Soldagen, where the children sing, and the community gather together. The snow is getting frosty and crispy day by day, and the right time to ski and snowshoeing in the surroundings peaks is bigger.

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Aurora Discover, Authenthic Fjords, Into the Wildnight (snowshoes), Avventura Artica (Svalbard), Whale Safari, Dogsledding.

FEBRUARY

The light is back and there is usually a lot of snow and the city truly feels alive. February is usually a great time for guests looking to experience snowshoeing, Reindeer or Husky sledding.

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Aurora Discover, Discover Tromsø, Authenthic Fjords, Sami Stories and Reindeer sledding, Into the Wildnight (snowshoes), Avventura Artica (Multiday tours in Svalbard), Dogsledding

MARCH:

The winter at his best! The days are getting longer, the temperature is cold and stable, meaning good chances of clear skies and more stable environmental conditions, if you are looking for the Northern Lights. There is some data to indicate that there is an increase of Auroral activity during Spring and Autumn, however, odds are good in Tromsø anyway, so we would not necessarily recommend this as a reason to come in March over another month that is better suited to your schedule. March is also suitable whenever you are looking to admire the magic northern fjords or go for an hike (both day and/or night) with the snowshoes.

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Aurora Discover, Discover Tromsø, Authenthic Fjords, Sami Stories and Reindeer sledding, Into the Wildnight (snowshoes), Avventura Artica (Multiday tours in Svalbard), Dogsledding, Luci ed isole del Nord (multiday tours in Lofoten)

APRIL:

During April the days are much longer then the night. Locals can easily squeeze in a post work ski tour or other winter activity. If you are looking to experience Tromsø with few tourists, then early April may be the month for you!

Last but not the least, this is the month day by day: snow - melt - snow - melt - rain - melt - snow (please repeat 30 days).

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Discover Tromsø, Authenthic Fjords, Sami Stories and Reindeer sledding, Into the wild (snowshoes), Dogsledding

MAY:

MAY THE SPRING BE WITH YOU! May is a month loved by Norwegians because there is plenty of time for skiing! The snow is already (almost totally melted) but some snowfalls are always around the corner. The 17th May is the Norwegian Constitution Day, this public holiday means grilling (BBQing), parades, traditional dress and a fair bit of alcohol, presenting an opportunity for a chatty foreigner to really get to know some locals. Tromsø has many bars and restaurants that will host dinners and events, there is always something exciting going on.

Last but not the least: the Midnight Sun will rise for the first time around the 21st May and the summer will begin!

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Discover Tromsø, Authenthic Fjords

JUNE:

In June you can expect long days underneath the Midnight Sun. If you come in late June you will truly experience the endless of summer. In June we enjoy hiking, picnics, summer landscape photography and more. Pack plenty of layers in June, it might Snow!

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Discover Tromsø, Authenthic Fjords, Midnight summer dream (midnight fjords and hike), Senja and Lofoten islands (multidays tour), Sea to Summit (kayak paddleling)

JULY:

During July travellers enjoy grilling under the midnight sun, swimming in the fjords and hikes through the summer landscapes in Tromsø but even in Lofoten. For the more enterprising travelers, the adventures are just begin: go to Svalbard if you want to discover the incredible wilderness, discover the ancient history of coal minors in Longyerbyen and Barentsburg go for an hike looking for the kind of the Arctic: the Polar Bear.

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Discover Tromsø, Authenthic Fjords, Midnight summer dream (midnight fjords and hike), Senja and Lofoten islands (multidays tour), Avventura Artica (multiday tour in Svalbard), Il fascino delle Isole Svalbard (multiday tour in Svalbard), Sea to Summit (kayak paddleling)

AUGUST:

The midnight sun has just set and we can easily sleep again! The days are still very long, and the environmental conditions are ideal for hiking, swimming, photography and the sweet, juicy wild berries are everywhere. Oh, do not forget to go for a fish tour. By the second half of the month, when the Solar activity will be very high, we might seen the first Northen Light of the new season.

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Discover Tromsø, Authenthic Fjords, Midnight summer dream (midnight fjords and hike), Senja and Lofoten islands (multidays tour), Avventura Artica (multiday tour in Svalbard), Sea to Summit (kayak paddleling)

SEPTEMBER:

During September the nights get longer, this means that by mid-September there are reasonable chances to see HerMajesty, the Green Lady: the Aurora Borealis. September the temperatures are warmer, and the climate is mild.
September and March are our favourite months of the year for the Northern Lights. Statistically, during the spring and fall equinox, the chances to see the Northern Lights are high. Photography talking: whenever the weather on the west will be good, we might get some nice sunset colors and, on the east, the dark sky of the night, both linked by the Northern Lights.

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Aurora Discover, Authenthic Fjords, Sea to Summit (kayak paddleling), Discover Tromsø

OCTOBER:

During October the nights are getting longer and longer, this means that there are reasonable chances to see Aurora Borealis. Generally, in October the temperatures are still warm, but the peaks are getting white and during the nights, looking for the Northern Lights, starts to get cold and frosty. During the day you might experience the faboulos fall warm color-palette of yellow, red and orange on the trees.

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Aurora Discover, Authenthic Fjords, Discover Tromsø, Into the wild (night hike)

NOVEMBER:

In late November the sun will set for the last time and we welcome the long Polar Night where the days have no daylight. Some years the snow has already fallen, so winter activities can begin and sometimes not. With long dark nights, the opportunity to see the Northern Lights increases, however, the snow arrives via clouds, indicating increased chances of cloudy evenings. But the lights during across midday still bright and the chances to see wildlife is high: why don’t you go for a Whale Safari in Skjervøy?

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Aurora Discover, Authenthic Fjords, Into the Wildnight (snowshoes), Whale Safari, Dogsledding, Sami Stories and Reindeer sledding

DECEMBER:

December is a magical time in northern Norway! The sun does not rise at all during December, the polar night is in full swing, during the Christmas week you can expect barely about an hour of pink day light with during “sunrise/sunset”.

The Christmas spirit is in the air, locals decorate their homes and the city centre with lights, traditional decorations and trees. Small Christmas markets pop up in the city square and the city is alive with Christmas.

WHAT WE SUGGEST: Aurora Discover, Authenthic Fjords, Into the Wildnight (snowshoes), Whale Safari, Dogsledding, Sami Stories and Reindeer sledding, Discover Tromsø
